Alternative Venues London (AVL) is the venue hire department of GL RFCA. Its sole purpose is to raise funding for reserves and cadets by hiring out the RFCA’s venues in London. With pressure on budgets, this is becoming vital in keeping the estate maintained for reserves and cadets to be able to operate.
AVL provides affordable, versatile and secure spaces for training, conferences, corporate events, filming and long-term lettings. Each of the buildings has unique features and are host to a number of unusual events.
Events
AVL offers stunning venues in Central London providing space for a variety of events from conferences to fashion shows, dinners and meetings. Some events that took place in 2019 include:
- J.W Anderson’s September fashion show, where they transformed our
- Bloomsbury Army Reserve Centre into a catwalk
- Miss World 2019 rehearsals
- Ant Middleton’s Mind over Muscle Day Camps, a two-weekend event
Training
With a unique combination of outdoor and indoor training spaces, AVL has nearly 40 affordable and secure options across London. The halls provide a large space that can be set up according to the client’s training requirements, whilst classrooms provide an intimate space for theory based learning. Regularly used by blue light services such as the NHS and LFB or corporate clients such as Harrods. The Sutton Army Reserve centre is now being used as a London Fire Brigade training centre by Babcock.
Filming
The past year has brought some interesting productions to our Military buildings. At the start of the year the cast and crew of Misbehaviour, a Kiera Knightly feature film, took over one of our Army Reserve Centres to film several scenes. Other productions have included, The Rook, Grantchester, Dad’s Army (2019), and Military Wives.
