The Goschen Medal is sponsored by the Goschen family in memory of Captain John Goschen MC RHA who was killed in action at Tobruk in December 1941. It is awarded annually to serving non-commissioned members of the Royal Regiment of Artillery for noteworthy service. The winner of the Goschen Medal in 2024 is Acting Bombardier Tom Scott, who serves with 106th (Yeomanry) Regiment Royal Artillery. He has been awarded this medal for his exceptional service as a soldier in the Army Reserves. Bombardier Scott joined the Army Reserve’s only Air Defence Regiment in 2019. From the very beginning, he has been a shining example of what it means to be a Reserve soldier. In just a year and a half, he completed his Level 2 training and successfully launched a live HVM missile to qualify for his role, an accomplishment that usually takes many years for Reserve Air Defenders to achieve. Bombardier Scott’s contributions go beyond his air defence duties; he has also played a crucial role in recruiting new soldiers through training and outreach activities. As an avid sports enthusiast, he manages the Battery’s football team and helps fellow soldiers stay fit. His commitment and leadership abilities have earned him the position of Defensive Team Captain for the Army American Football team as well.

Aside from his military duties, Bombardier Scott is deeply involved in charitable work. He organises the annual blood donor drive for his Battery and coordinates their efforts to sell poppies every year to raise funds for the Royal British Legion appeal. Bombardier Scott was chosen as this year’s recipient of the Goschen Medal for his dedication to serving the Army and his unit, as well as his selfless commitment to his local community.
