London teenagers attend Army Experience 2024, a three-day experience to learn about the British Army through practical exercises and displays.
The candidates were received at the Woolwich Barracks, London with a standard Army uniform comprising a Combat Jacket, trousers and t-shirt. Lieutenant Colonel Darren Johnston, SO1 Engagement, Army Headquarters London District, welcomed everyone with a fun and detailed presentation about how the Army operates and all the things a soldier can learn and do.

After a quick lunch in the Barracks cookhouse and now in uniform, the teens interacted with young soldiers and gained an insight into a normal day of duties with the British Army. The young people, fascinated by the Army vehicles positioned at the Woolwich Barracks, expressed great interest in learning more about them.
To add some excitement, candidates were treated to some command tasks: Tyre Tower, Laser Pods and some mathematical problems.

Day two the candidates took part in several stands showing some of the different types of training that soldiers undertake while serving. Some highlights included, drill, weapon handling and operating Army vehicles using simulators. They were also introduced to Army fitness followed by an exercise that taught them how to navigate through an occupied building in a crisis. All were amazed by the activities; the number of things to be considered and the risk involved when undertaking such a mission.

The final day had a tactical theme. Entrants were provided with camouflage cream which was then applied in the ordinary order. To start, they learnt about different types of patrolling, followed by section attacks. Candidates were now tasked to construct a shelter and cook in the field. Everyone showed great spirit and worked quickly in teams to create the shelters and prepare food.
This brought the three-day experience to an end, with new friends, comfort, food and a better understanding of the British Army and the military as a whole.
